I Can't Quite Believe It Myself

In a momentary(?) burst of insanity last week, I think I may have finished writing Many the Miles. There are three, very juicy, action-packed chapters left to post, and then it's done. I'm toying with the idea of adding a fourth sort of epilogue-y thing, but I'm not sure. Right now, I'm leaning against it. I'm not entirely sure when those chapters will go up at ff.net yet. My beta has some major life event going on right now, and I'm trying to be patient to give her the time to deal with that. But just know--they're done, and they're coming.

And wow. I never thought I'd be able to say that. Given that I started this fic as a one-shot in December 2007 while I was still writing Gravity, there were moments that I thought I'd never manage to turn this fic into anything. Then, when it started to sprout legs of its own, I never thought I'd be able to finish it. The final product is going to clock in at 20 chapters and have a word count that's a little over 100k. Insane.

One of the things that has happened as I've worked on this over such a long period is that I've forgotten a bit about some of the earlier chapters. Nothing plot-wise at all -- I've been keeping all the plots and subplots together in my head quite well, I think. But details and such get lost. I never really get a chance mid-project to go back and read what I've written. I finish a chapter to the best of my ability at the time that I'm writing it, and then I move on. The other thing that has happened, and this is certainly true for the timespan in which I wrote MtM, is that I've learned a lot about writing over the course of writing this. I know that the piece isn't even in that regard. Aspects of later chapters are probably much better than some of the earlier ones. So, for that reason, I've decided that I'm going to spend the next few days rereading the fic from start to finish, and I'm going to make some minor revisions. I won't do anything to the plot--all of it will be technical work. Then, since I never got around to posting this fic on my LJ (beyond the first couple chapters, anyway), I think I'll post the modified version here. I'll probably do that over the span of the next couple weeks so it should flood anyone's flist. But I think it will be helpful for me in making sure that I'm satisfied with the ending before I release that part to the rest of the world. I've worked too hard and for too long on this fic to mail it in now.

I guess when this is over, I'll be in the market for a new fic idea to pacify my mind and distract me from the realfic I'm working on...Or, maybe I should just study for the GRE since I'm taking that in 3 weeks. Hmmm...

I soo can't wait. I'm going to reread the past chapters again!
I loved this fic, and I've been patiently waiting for the rest of it, and it's coming soon!

And I vote you work on a new MerDer Fic something cannon :)

Thanks for the enthusiasm! :)

I am definitely tempted to do some Mer/Der canon stuff, but it's tough coming up with ideas now. I'm insanely happy with how this whole Derek arc is progressing and where I think it's going to end up, so I don't have an overwhelming need to fix anything. We'll see if I feel that way at the end of the season, though. I'm sure Shonda will mess something up!

Do you have an estimated time frame for when you'll be posting more chapters to your story?

Just wanted to let you know that I've been keeping up with MthM on fanfiction.net. How come you've posted more chapters there than on your website. Are you making changes and edits to this version?

I've got the story on my alerts and would love to read more soon. Especially knowing you've got it almost finished.

This long hiatus with GA is just about killing me. =) MacSmitty

I know, I've been totally MIA lately. I took a breather to study for and take the GRE, and that pretty much wiped me out. I updated today at ff.net, though, so hopefully that makes up for something. :)

I'm totally revising the story style-wise (not content-wise) on LJ, so that's why it's not as far along here. That process was also delayed by my glorious test-taking extravaganza. So happy to have the GRE behind me...
